How to print a QR code on a business card

Most codes that fail to scan were printed too small or too faint.

Keep it at least 2 cm wide

That's about 0.8 inches. The tool tells you the smallest safe size for your code, since more details make a denser code.

Leave a white border

Scanners need a clear margin around the code. The downloads include it, so don't crop it off or print over it.

Dark code, light background

Stick to a dark color on white or cream. Light colors and busy backgrounds make cameras struggle.

Use the SVG for print

SVG stays sharp at any size. Send it to your printer or drop it into Canva, Illustrator or InDesign.

01Is this QR code generator really free?

Yes. You can make and download as many codes as you like without an account, a trial or a credit card.

02Does the QR code expire?

No. Your details are stored inside the code itself, so there is no server that can switch it off. It works as long as the print does.

03Why do some QR codes stop working?

Many generators make "dynamic" codes that point to their own servers. When the trial or subscription ends, they switch the code off, even if it's already printed. The save contact codes made here don't depend on any server.

04What happens when someone scans it?

On iPhone and Android, the camera shows your contact card with the option to add it. Everything you typed is filled in, so they don't type anything.

05Does it work without internet?

Yes. The phone reads your details straight from the code. A live card QR needs internet because it opens a web page.

06Can I add my photo to the QR code?

Not to a save contact code. A photo is far too much data to fit inside a QR code that still scans at business card size. A live card shows your photo, links and more.

07What if I change jobs or my number?

A save contact code keeps the details it was made with, so you would make a new code and reprint. With a live card QR you edit your card and the printed code keeps working with the new details.

08What is a vCard QR code?

vCard is the standard format phones use for contacts. A vCard QR code stores your contact in that format, which is why phones know to offer "Add to contacts" when they scan it.

09What's the difference between vCard and MeCard?

MeCard is a shorter contact format that makes smaller codes but holds less and works in fewer apps. We use vCard 3.0 because iPhone and Android both read it reliably, including names with accents.

10Should I use my LinkedIn QR code instead?

A LinkedIn QR code opens your profile and only works well for people who use LinkedIn. A contact QR code saves your phone and email straight to their contacts. A live card can do both: it holds your LinkedIn link and a save contact button.

11What size should I print it?

At least 2 cm (0.8 in) wide, bigger if you add a lot of details. The tool shows the smallest safe size for your code, and 3 cm is comfortable for most business cards.

12Can I track how many people scan it?

Not with a save contact code, because nothing sits between the code and the phone. A live card shows how many people viewed it, and Pro splits out QR scans from link clicks.
